St Armand. Inspection of kit and rifles, then move on again to Mondicourt and take up our old billets. Pay parade.
Hebuterne. Nothing all day, but pack up ready to move off. Relieved about 5 pm and march to St Armand via Souastre. Good billets and clean.
Hebuterne. Daytime and shelling. Ramp digging fatigue at night, finish about 12.30 pm.
Z Hedge trench. One or two ‘whizz-bangs’ in the trench during the shelling, but no damage done. Relieved in afternoon and go back to our old billets at Hebuterne. Evening off.
R trenches. Move up first thing in the morning to the ‘Z Hedge’ trench. This is the new trench that was dug when we were up last. No dug-outs, plenty of shelling. Take all the men out in front at night, and place them in shell holes behind the wire, and then post ‘A’ Coy’s screen 30 yards in front of wire.
R trenches. Fairly quiet during the day but, in the evening, they start sending over their big trench mortars.
Bayencourt. Return at 4.30 am. Pack up ready to move off. Take over R trenches (old Y48, 49 and 50) in afternoon. Battalion comes up later. Have a nice bivvy to myself in ‘York Street’, containing two wire beds, table, stools, fireplace and overmantle. Registering 9.2s each day.
