Barn. Orders come through to move off at 11.15 am. Wash and shave and have a jolly breakfast in the farm field. Entrain 1 pm in horse boxes, pas trainloads of refugees coming from Ypres and Poperinghe. Detrain at Poperinghe, march out to a large farm to bivouac, and have our tea but, owing to the rain which keeps on all night, are billeted in a farmhouse close by.
Barn. Route march in morning. Weather turns very cold and windy. Pack up to move off at a moment’s notice in afternoon. Standing to all night.
Barn. On guard. Wash, shave and do some washing. Beautiful sunrise. There have been lovely sunsets each evening while we have been in this billet. Off guard 8 pm.
The Second Battle of Ypres started on 22nd April, and continued until 25th May. It was the only major attack launched by the Germans in 1915 on the Western Front, and was also the occasion of the first use of chlorine gas on the Western Front.

Barn. Wash and shave. Church parade in Town Hall at Steenweerk, in same room as we saw the cinema. Communion service afterwards. Another perfect day. Go for a stroll in the evening towards Bailleul, see an armoured car belonging to the R.N.A.S. stuck in the mud.
In the trenches. Cleaning up ready to move off. Relieved by Worcesters at 4.15 pm. March off to billets in a barn about two miles west of Steenweerk. Arrive 7.30 pm. Orderly. Fine weather.
In the trenches. Last two days the weather has been lovely again, quite hot during the day. Nothing to do. Hear we are going to be relieved tomorrow and are going back. Raining all night. Wash and shave in ‘J.J.’ hole.
