Ryveld. Divisional holiday. Stop about in billets all day to hear about leave. Parade at h.q. at 4.45 pm and proceed by motor bus to Godewaresvelde. Supper there, and turn in in rest billets.
Ryveld. Company drill in morning. Nothing on in afternoon. Concert in evening to commemorate landing of L.R.B. in France. Promoted by ‘D’ Company and held in a shed at Steenwoorde, but turned into a battalion affair. Cigars and drinks free. March back to billets, arriving about quarter to ten.
Ryveld. Run before breakfast. Bombing afterward and bayonet fighting. Company drill in afternoon. First day without rain since we have been here. See litter of pigs have their nose’ ringed. Yesterday saw rainbow with one end actually resting on ground in front of haystack.
Ryveld. Run before breakfast. Company drill and N.C.Os’ class. Route march in afternoon through Steenwoorde and Winezeele, pouring with rain. Pay a visit to Millar in evening.
Ryveld. Parade at 7.30 am for trench digging but, as it is pouring all day, we leave off about eleven and return. Nothing doing rest of day.
Ryveld. Raining. Company drill and rapid loading. Lecture in afternoon. Pouring in torrents all the evening. Just go up to the guardroom, stop in for rest of evening.
Ryveld. Parade in morning, when Act/Sgt. Strange is stripped in front of the Battalion for drunkenness. Billet inspection. Go into Steenwoorde in afternoon. Raining hard. Tea, look round, then to the pictures, supper and back again.
Ryveld. Breakfast 6.30 am. Start at 7.30 am for trench digging and return at 2.30 pm. Pay parade in afternoon. In the village in evening.
Ryveld. Rum before breakfast. Company drill in morning. Hear we are going to be turned into a Pioneer batallion. Go to Steenwoorde to see the pictures in the afternoon. Millar goes to Orderly Room. Macintosh capes issued.
Ryveld. Route march and trench digging. Pouring with rain all the time, come back wet through. Leave starts again, five men a week. Spend the evening in farm kitchen.
