Brewery. Clean rifle parade. Good wash, needed it as boots were absolutely full of mud. J A Millar and I went in evening to M’slle Stella’s, had bread and milk and stewed apples. Gave her copy of Millar’s and my photos. Snow in afternoon. Didn’t last.
Retire 200’ in wood as no counter attack was made, wait ‘till one o’clock. March back to Brewery. Have a rest. J A Millar and I go out to dinner in evening at ‘A la Concorde’. Got through a bottle of wine myself. Cave’s Xmas present arrives.
Brewery. Did nothing in morning. Thought place was going to be shelled at dinner time, all went down to the cellar. Something doing, go back to Report Centre Farm in afternoon. Up to the woods in evening to act as reserve in attack being made on German trenches at edge of wood. Stay out in the open all night in the rain. Help in stretcher bearing carrying wounded back from firing line to dressing station. Chapman wounded in the arm. 400 casualties partly owing to our own artillery not stopping in time.
Brewery. Nothing doing in morning. Parade 12.30 for fatigue work in woods making small trenches in reserve. Heavy firing overhead. Baldwin, J A Millar and I fry steaks in evening but have to cook them ourselves in an estaminet. ‘Some’ dinner with potatoes cooked in butter.
Brewery. Big gun fire going on continually every day. Star shells and searchlights every night. Rumours of an attack. Go to M’slle Stella’s again in evening. J A Millar returns. Orderly. Pay.
Brewery. Parade sick in morning. Did nothing all day. Coy still on fatigue. Go out in evening with Peck to No 9 Route de Messines for bread and milk. Meet M’selle Stella.
Brewery. Coy. go on fatigue work. Parade sick and stop in. Whitehouse has to go to hospital for dysentery. Ploegsteert shelled again in afternoon. Apply for commission.
Brewery. Company resting. Parade sick, have to stay in billet. Shave and shaving brush wash. J A Millar goes to hospital at Steenwerck for bad foot. Hear from Ord that he is in England, Cardiff Hospital. Houses shelled all round us. People fly out as quickly as they can.
Brewery. Coy. Representative. Go up to Bunhill Row in afternoon to help bail out one of the trenches. Farm by us set on fire by shells. Can hardly speak. Get pipe lighter from Mr Ninnis.
