Ryveld. Parade in morning, when Act/Sgt. Strange is stripped in front of the Battalion for drunkenness. Billet inspection. Go into Steenwoorde in afternoon. Raining hard. Tea, look round, then to the pictures, supper and back again.
Poperinghe. Route march in morning to Abeele. Shopping in afternoon, go to the ‘Fancies’ in evening, a performance much after the style of the ‘Follies’ at Armentieres. Note: Poperinghe practically deserted, no water in our billets, have to go round to houses and estaminets to try and find water each day for washing and dinners.
Ryveld. Breakfast 6.30 am. Start at 7.30 am for trench digging and return at 2.30 pm. Pay parade in afternoon. In the village in evening.
Ryveld. Rum before breakfast. Company drill in morning. Hear we are going to be turned into a Pioneer batallion. Go to Steenwoorde to see the pictures in the afternoon. Millar goes to Orderly Room. Macintosh capes issued.
Ryveld. Route march and trench digging. Pouring with rain all the time, come back wet through. Leave starts again, five men a week. Spend the evening in farm kitchen.
Ryveld. Drill and N.C.Os’ class in morning. Raining. Route march to a place the other side of Steenwoorde to see a football match, in full marching order. L.R.B. won 3-2. Coffee in farm kitchen in evening.
Ryveld. Drill morning and afternoon. No water for drinking, and only a stinking pond to wash in. Stand by in billets all day.
Blendecques. Clearing up billets. Raining hard. March down to Church Square and go by motor bus, starting at 9 am, to a village just outside Steenwoorde, Ryveld. Billeted in a barn. Stroll about in evening, but only allowed a mile out from billets.
