Ergnies. In billets. Rifle inspection in afternoon. Nothing else to do. People at cottage make us a tart for dinner. Supper at cottage, egg omelette, onions and potatoes mixed, rice, cider. Still slowly thawing.
Huppy. Up at 5 am. Breakfast at 6 am. Parade at 8.30 am, and march, via Lurcourt and Pont Remy, to Ergnies through the snow. Dinner on the way. Hell of a march, about 16 miles. Grub directly we arrive at our barn, people very nice. Supper in the cottage. Look after blankets.
Huppy. March after breakfast, but nothing doing after dinner. Snow thawing slightly. Another night at the restaurant, followed by fowl and sausage rolls for supper.
Huppy. Run in morning. Snowing hard. Snowball fight between C, D and B Coy., from our billets right through the village to B Coy’s. billets. Spend the evening in restaurant.
Huppy. Company go to Abbeville, but I have to stop behind for Battalion N.C.Os’ class in afternoon. Company ordered back as orders come, be ready to move at any moment. Ammunition issued in afternoon, and get my boots repaired at village shoemaker’s, drinking hot rum punch the while. Class washed out. Stroll in evening. Snow still holding.
Huppy. Two mile run in morning, manage to stick it. Guard mounting again. Battalion N.C.Os’ class in afternoon and pay parade. Supper at Ruffin Hubert’s Restaurant. Vermouth and Malaga first, finish up with hot rum punch. Snow still holding.
Huppy. Run before breakfast. Snowing, started previous night, and laying. March and guard mounting in the snow. Battalion N.C.Os’ class after dinner. Write letters in the evening. Bloaters for supper.
