Hebuterne. Village of course free of civilians, trenches run through the gardens all over the place. Nothing doing all day, village shelled as per programme. Take fatigue party up to Sap 4 to deepen it ready for when the men go up to dig new front line.
Hebuterne. Return at 3.30 am from 2nd line. We ‘stand to’ at 2 am and 7 pm. Village shelled a bit, and in evening and morning sprayed by machine gun fire. Evening off.
St Amand. Communion in morning. Go for a stroll, batteries of 9.2s about. After dinner march to Hebuterne. In charge of 2nd line at night. Trench dug along a lane covered by trees.
Halloy. Clearing up. Mess about at rugby. March off at 8.30 pm for St Amand, 15 Platoon having stopped behind us as rearguard. Billeted in barns and huts, we are in a cottage.

Halloy. Drill. Bombing in brigade trenches in afternoon. Battalion concert in evening. We hire a piano at Doullens, the R.Es supply all materials for stage, acetylene lamps for footlights etc. Splendid concert, held in orchard by officers’ huts.
