Sunday 1st August 1915

Berguette. Splendid morning, swim directly after breakfast, sun bathe afterwards. See the little children coming from mass, dressed in white. Walk round to Isbergues church to find out time of evening service, and home via the Shrine of St Isbergues as Chapman has not seen it. Go with L/Cpl. Main to Vespers at 4 pm. Church is packed, all the children are their after their first communion, the boys in black with white ties and big white rosettes on their left arms, and the girls all in white with white veils. During the service the children go round in procession, each carrying an unlighted candle decorated with silver and gilt paper flowers. Tea at an estaminet at Isbergues. Slight shower, very hot. On guard.
