H.Q. Guard. Relieved in afternoon. In the evening go up to R 5 where we have a comfortable bivvy and do ourselves well. Mr Smith, our platoon officer, seems a bit nervy. Thirty-six hours truce on our side.

Officer was Horace Smith; not surprised he was nervous – only arrived in France on 19 Jan! wounded 1.7.16 Gommecourt, KIA 8.10.16 Les Boeufs
Later on in the diary HOB lists the whole of “D” Platoon who attacked at Gommecourt. Lt Smith in front, and Sgt H O Brown right behind him!
